Marine Life & Surfing

Being a surfer isn’t just a hobby; it’s a lifestyle. Surfing is about enjoying the waves while connecting with nature, spending hours in the ocean learning to understand it., For this reason, we should respect the marine environment while surfing.

1. Understanding the importance of ocean health

The oceans are super important for our planet. Without them, we would not exist. They keep things in balance, from weather systems to the gases that make up our atmosphere. Oceans absorb vast amounts of CO2 and produce lots of the oxygen that we breathe.  But human activity like increasing CO2 emissions is causing climate change, messing up the way the ocean works, and making the whole planet unsteady.

Learning about the ocean can teach us a lot about how we impact the environment and how this impacts us. It helps us understand weather changes and climate shifts. Our oceans are like the lungs of the planet, helping us stay alive and keeping our air clean.

2. Surfers’ unique relationship with the ocean

The ocean teaches us resilience. The unpredictable waves remind us that life has its ups and downs and that’s normal. Surfing shifts our mindset. It shows that effort and persistence pay off. When you finally reach your goals, the hard work feels worthwhile.

Humans are naturally drawn to water. As surfers, the ocean is more than a destination; it’s a powerful draw. It offers an escape from a busy world, bringing calm and a sense of freedom. The vastness of the ocean puts our problems into perspective. Sometimes, we head out even in poor conditions to clear our minds, meditate, or reset. The ocean has a healing effect, leaving us feeling more relaxed and rejuvenated.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or an advanced surfer. Surfing allows each of us to form our own unique relationship with the ocean, regardless of our ability or skill level.

3. How surfers could do more to respect marine life

The connection with the ocean should be a two-way relationship; it can provide us with so much happiness, peacefulness, and joy, so we should take care of it and respect it,: Here are a few things we can do to respect the marine environment:

Don’t Litter:

never drop your litter and when you can, do beach cleans. There are over 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic trash in our oceans. Not only does it make our environment unpleasant to surf in, but it also kills marine life.

Using environmentally friendly products:

Surfing can be more enjoyable when using environmentally friendly products. Choose biodegradable waxes and eco-friendly boards to protect our oceans and enjoy surfing sustainably.

Respecting marine habitats:

Surfers should avoid standing and walking over the reef where possible as this breaks and crushes the coral damaging these fragile ecosystems. Wearing booties for your own protection is good but it doesn’t mean you should purposefully walk over the reef.

Supporting conservation efforts:

Surfers can support organizations and initiatives that work to protect marine life and preserve coastal ecosystems.

4. While surfing, what marine animals can you expect to see?

While surfing, you might spot various marine animals, depending on the location and time of year. Some common marine animals surfers might see include:

Fish:

Depending on the region, you may see schools of fish swimming beneath you while you’re out in the water.

Dolphins:

Dolphins are known to surf alongside waves and can sometimes be spotted playing in the waves or swimming nearby.

Seabirds:

Seabirds like seagulls, pelicans, and terns are often seen flying over the water or diving for fish.

Seals and sea lions:

In some coastal areas, seals and sea lions may be spotted swimming or sunning themselves on rocks or beaches.

Turtles:

Sea turtles are commonly found in coastal waters and may surface near surfers.

Sharks:

In some locations such as Australia you might see sharks, however, it’s very unlikely in Mentawai!

At Hollow Tree’s Resort you can expect to see lots of colorful fish while you surf, and also turtles and dolphins if you’re lucky!

Research and Understand Local Marine Life

Before heading out, research local marine life and common marine species. Understanding the types of marine life you might encounter while surfing can help you stay aware and prepared for the sudden encounters in the water.

Respect Marine Wildlife

Maintaining a safe distance from all marine creatures and respecting marine wildlife is crucial. Avoid touching, chasing, or disturbing animals to prevent provoking defensive reactions. This not only ensures your safety but also the marine life. Also, be cautious with shiny objects or accessories that may catch the unnecessary attention of curious marine animals.

Stay Calm and Use a Leash

If you see marine life, remain composed and avoid sudden movements. Understand that most marine animals are curious, not aggressive. Staying calm helps ensure the situation doesn’t escalate. Always wear a surfboard leash to stay connected to your board. A leash provides a safe platform if you encounter marine life, allowing you to stay secure and avoid panic.

Choose the Right Surfing Times

Be aware that many marine predators are more active during dawn and dusk. Opt for surfing during daylight hours to reduce the risk of encounters with these predators. Look out for schools of fish, which might indicate larger predators nearby. Pay attention to bird activity, as diving birds often signal the presence of fish, potentially attracting predators.

Support Conservation and Wear Protective Gear

Wear protective gear, like a wetsuit, which can offer some protection against marine life encounters and environmental conditions. Supporting and engaging in conservation efforts to protect marine life is essential. Understand that a healthy marine environment benefits both surfers and marine creatures, ensuring sustainable and enjoyable surfing experiences for everyone.
